Steel Pennies is David Patton on banjo and vocals, Kerry Claxton on mandolin and vocals, Kevin Slick on guitar and vocals, Keith Murdock on dobro, and Kathy Foster-Patton on bass. David, a veteran of Coal Creek Bluegrass Band, joined Kathy and several friends who were playing on a regular basis, and Steel Pennies was soon performing for appreciative audiences. David heard Kevin Slick at a jam and asked him if he was interested in joining Steel Pennies. Kerry Claxton is a veteran of Giddyup Kitty and Coal Creek who has played with the band members over the years. Steel Pennies plays a mix of traditional bluegrass and original music and is always looking for a new and interesting music to add to their repertoire. The band took its name from the 1943 steel penny, produced by the U.S. Mint to save copper during the Second World War. The rusty, lonesome, sound of the Steel Pennies harkens back to the heyday of bluegrass music.

Steel Pennies , purveyors of rusty, zinc-coated music, is a five-piece bluegrass band featuring lead and harmony singing accompanied by banjo, guitar, fiddle, dobro, and bass.  We play a rousing mix of original and traditional bluegrass tunes, and we’re not above throwing in some old country, honky-tonk, and rock and roll songs when the crowd gets rowdy!
